Negotiations between the Joe Biden administration and TikTok to keep the video-sharing service operational in the US have stopped due to worries that Chinese ownership of the company constitutes a national security danger.
Once a deal is made, the platform will be able to keep functioning in the US, but it will place new limitations on how US user data is maintained.
National Security Impact: The Justice Department Assesses
Some of the committee’s agencies, including the Justice Department, must approve the agreement before it can be implemented because it does not go far enough to safeguard US user data from Chinese actors.
However, we are convinced that we are on track to fully meet all acceptable US national security considerations, the TikTok representative said. “We will not comment on the specifics of classified negotiations with the US government,” the spokesperson said.
US authorities have been investigating TikTok since 2019.
