Tencent Holdings Ltd. has acquired from Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. the rights to create and release a mobile version of Blue Protocol, wagering that one of the year’s most anticipated multiplayer games can rekindle global growth.
The largest gaming corporation in the world has put together a team of developers for the undertaking and has exclusive rights to worldwide distribution. With this partnership, Tencent is continuing its successful strategy of producing mobile content for brands like Call of Duty and PUBG.
The PC version of the game was published in Japan in June, and it quickly became the fastest-launching domestic Bandai Namco online PC game, attracting 600,000 players in its first week, including 200,000 concurrent connections at its peak.
Japanese ACG (anime, comics, and games) franchises are already well-liked in Tencent’s domestic market and are becoming more and more popular in the West. A generation of Chinese video game designers has also been impacted by the genre, particularly the team behind the ground-breaking Genshin Impact.
Given the difficulties at home, Tencent is increasing its gaming investments in regions like Europe, Japan, and South Korea to grow these markets into multimedia behemoths that bind Chinese customers to its ecosystem and support its international goals.
The game will be released for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms in Western regions next year by Amazon.com Inc.’s gaming business.
