The automaker will release a battery prototype with Solid Power.
BMW AG is attempting to accelerate the development of solid-state batteries by producing cell prototypes at its Munich research and development center in collaboration with Solid Power Inc.
The automaker plans to start cell production in the first half of this year to develop sufficiently large battery cells.
Testing of new elements will occur until 2025.
Solid Power is one of the dozens of companies vying for the “holy grail” of battery innovation: solid-state batteries with increased range, faster charge times, lower fire risk, and lower cost.
Solid Power has development agreements with both BMW and Ford Motor Company, which is also an investor, and if the company’s technology meets specific performance targets, it may be considered for vehicle supply contracts.
